Southern furniture is orders of magnitude harder to locate and collect than examples from other regions, but if you are looking at this listing, presumably you are aware of that. Offered from a lower Alabama estate with family history to the Birmingham area, most of us in Alabama would hope this is a rare example of Alabama made furniture. Yet, it can be quite difficult to distinguish vernacular examples in North Alabama from Tennessee, hence the regional attribution. This candle stand features a cutout pattern to the legs and feet that I have been unable to attribute to a maker as is often the case with rural made objects and particular with regional neoclassical forms. The reeding is clearly influenced by high style Baltimore examples. Although the surface is old, it may not be original as work has been done to the table by restorers who were not museum conservators.. as can be seen by the glued leg. Yet, the surface is old, and in deference to individual clients taste, preference and access to conservation… it is left as found. This is a high style inspired rural or vernacular object from a region, where we simply don’t find enough remaining! The kerf marks are quite visible in the photos, and suggest that all parts are original to the table.
