Manjushri bodhisattva, the oldest and most important of mahāyāna literature, late 19th / early 20th century nepal. He is depicted brandishing a flaming sword in his right hand, indicating the realization of transcendent wisdom that eliminates ignorance and duality. His right hand is shown in vitarka mudra, the gesture of argumentation. Provenance: estate of art collector and dealer claude de marteau. All other himalayan and southeast asian art pieces to come are from the same source, and have been stored in his storerooms for over 50 years. Sold with certificate of origin.
