American black walnut dower chest over three divided drawers. The chest features post and panel construction with the corner posts terminating in turned feet. The hinged lift top reveals an interior fitted with till, and the top has an applied rim molding with replacement hinges. Shrinkage of the single board top required reducing the interior of the front edge molding. At an earlier date, the surface mounted lock was replaced with a repositioned keeper. The chest is divided from the drawers with an applied reed molding and an additional molding applied to the base. The drawers are fitted with their original half morticed steel locks. Poplar secondary wood.
American, Lower Delaware Valley, circa 1830.
