Circa 1825 Wine Serving or Drinking Table, England. A rare form, the center has a leaf that lifts out and the ends have extra leaves to lift up for use when serving creating a horse shoe form, while it makes a large serving console table when not in use for serving drinks. Fine mahogany timbers; raised on turned, reeded legs of robust design ending in original gilt brass cups & casters. Almost certainly by Gillows. One loper for leaves replaced. For examples of this rare “horseshoe” table as it was also known, see: Macquoid, “The Age of Mahogany”, Vol. II, plates 206 & 207; Edwards, “The Dictionary of English Furniture”, pp.318-319; “Gillow Furniture Designs”, 93/30, 96/1125, 95/703/, 912 & 993.
